Thurisaz - Rune of The Giants (Morphic Field)
Thurisaz is the third rune of the Elder Futhark. It means "Giant" or "Thorn" and is associated with the Frost Giants. It is the first of the "obstacle runes".
In the modern day, where we thankfully do not live among giants, but this does not mean the symbolism is outdated. In life, we may experience that issues and problems we face seem bigger than they are. These are things beyond our current conscious awareness, almost like Giants, and after they are resolved we often notice that our awareness has expanded. If they occur again, we are much better equipped to handle them due to our greater experience, knowledge and understanding.
Other times, when we are in new and tough situations it can be quite chaotic and overwhelming coming to terms with things. These examples show how things can be overwhelming when we lack awareness and understanding. It can similarly be seen where if a person may lack full understanding of what they are doing, they may end up learning the hard way. In all these situations, the underlying energy and forces at play are the same.
Thurisaz holds the same underlying energy. It is a powerful force that holds the power for great change, learning, and wisdom. Much like a thorn, Thurisaz is said to be "sharp", and it should not be seized. It is a force that, when treated with care and appropriate consideration, can lead to greatly profound experiences. With vigilance and responsibility, we are able to overcome what we believe are giants and raise our awareness.
In some cases, it is also believed to be associated with Thor, the God of Thunder from Norse mythology who is also known as the slayer of Giants. This rune suggests defense, lessons, and raising one's awareness to be better equipped in future. While it suggests regeneration and catharsis, it also suggests vigilance and responsibility, against the danger giants pose.
Thurisaz, while sometimes seen a rune of strength, can also be a rune of conflict. This could be the conflict with current circumstances, leading to you increasing your awareness. Thurisaz also holds association with conflict due to it representing the end of cycles. Thurisaz can suggest bringing an end to outdated structures, habits, and energies and moving forward to grow, a process that is not always effortless. This process involve catharsis and purging, the necessary but intense clearing that Thurisaz is represents. Thurisaz is about the active intervention and ending of cycles, and this may include potential upheaval.
While it may seem a bit overwhelming, Thurisaz is also associated with protection, strength, barrier breaking, overcoming obstacles, and finding new order. Thurisaz is about clearing so that you may initiate a new cycle with a clean slate. It helps you protect your boundaries and confront problems and challenges directly.
